With the release of Modern
Warfare this week and the endless
deluge of analysis, reviews and comment that will undoubtedly go with it, some
consensus is already evident. While on-the-whole praised, the principal
criticism levelled at Modern Warfare 3 is
its lack of ambition - its contentment to tread a similar albeit more polished
path to its predecessors, interestingly a charge that could never have been
laid at Call of Duty 4, the first Modern Warfare title that came out in
2007 and single-handedly impacted the direction of big-name FPS titles for the
next four years.

So, why in an article about Alan Wake have I opened with a paragraph about Modern Warfare 3? Put simply, because in many ways the two games

Shrouded in mystery, what new and exciting things might Nintendo reveal about it's somewhat lame horse of a console? It's no secret that what is a technological advancement of the sort that would have previously solidified Nintendo on top of the inovation podium, has fallen since the first hurdle. With a press conference a few months ago announcing a new colour, several release dates and of course, that extra circle pad - Nintendo have announced another press conference scheduled for tomorrow.

Little is known about the pre-recorded event which is due to stream live through Japanese site Nico Nico, UStream and Douga. Rumoured announcements include new firmware information, including further details on Nintendo's 3D video capture capabilities and further information on Mario Kart 7's wireless capabilities. That doesn't sound like a great deal of information to warrant a full press conference however, so perhaps Nintendo have a few surprises in store as well?

We'll be sure to keep you updated about the conference tomorrow.
September 20th sees the Midnight Launch of Gears of War 3 across much of the UK. We at 8brit were contacted by a reader who had her own opinions on how such launches should be handled and in particular what preparations attendees should make before turning up. Needless to say the somewhat opinionated "Missy E" provided us with these suggestions in written form for us to include here. So without further ado, Missy E's first guest post:

The launch date of Gears of War 3 is nearly upon us. I, like many other gamers, can’t
wait to queue up in the cold and wet for a midnight launch. But there is a little voice
inside me telling me not to bother. Don’t get me wrong; it’s not the game reviews, or my
local stockists, that are telling me to stay home. I’m afraid to say it’s the other gamers in
the queue that always put me off attending these launches.

Sadly, we’ve all been there. You know who I mean. There are those in the queue who
rarely emerge in daylight hours, and who live in their clothes for weeks just for the
chance to earn a few extra gamer score points. Well, I’m sorry, but if you wish to
increase your chances of scoring anything at a midnight launch you’ll need to make a
little bit more of an effort. I know that for a very small minority the stickiness of the right
bumper button on their Xbox controller is more important in life than any other type of
stickiness. But, you see, as a girl I have certain standards in bodily hygiene which some
gamers fail to realise.

I don’t expect much. I don’t expect everyone to smell (or look) like the Old Spice
man, although fortunately some gamer guys do. Equally, there’s no need to dress like
a penguin in that old tuxedo your mum bought you for your school prom; although it is
true that secretly a few of us gamer chicks are hoping to find their James Bond. Let’s face
it, at this launch all of us are looking for our very own Marcus Fenix to take home. I’m
just of the opinion that checking the condition of my controller before leaving the house
should be more important than checking to see which way the wind is blowing.

So let’s get together at midnight on September 20th for all the right reasons. For one night only –
how can I say this kindly – please wash; and you never know who you’ll end up scoring
Some of the most hotly anticipated titles for this year will be playable at the event so stay tuned to 8brit over the weekend to see our impressions on the like of Modern Warfare 3, Skyward Sword and Uncharted 3 to name but a few! Our previews will be going up tomorrow so be sure to check back to 8brit for more!
Okay, so you've been living under a rock, or you've only recently discovered the wonders of the internet and video games. Those are likely the only excuses you have for not playing the ground breaking game changer that was Portal.

Well, good news if that's the case. Portal is now FREE on PC and Mac until the 20th September. after which you'll have to dig into your pocket and pay for it. So go, educate yourself and slap yourself on the wrist for not already owning a copy.

In addition to these details Nintendo have also announced that a new metallic red version of the 3DS will go on sale from September 30th. Supposedly Nintendo stated that this was in order to "celebrate" the console's 1 million plus sales in the region. Since America and Japan have already been privy to a "flame red" version of the console however, it's not so much a celebration as Europe finally getting what the other regions have already had. Today saw Nintendo's pre-TGS Show kick off with news primarily focused on the 3DS. The conference announced both to Japan and the world some exciting new titbits about the future of the console and what gamers can expect over the next several months.

Nintendo didn't disappoint: revealing not only release dates for both new 3DS hardware and software, but also dropping in some information on the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword title for Wii.

Starting with Skyward Sword then: Myamito-San himself confirmed that the title would have between 50-100 hours of gameplay, including a boss challenge mode and a second play through incentive in order to further prolong the life of the title. That promises to be one of the longest Zelda titles to date.
He'd been in the wilderness, the dark formidable emptiness of nothingness, for a long time, the longest time. Have you ever desired a golden ring? No-don't be crude. I'm talking of course about one of the ones abundant in the Sonic universe that the little blue klepto just can't get enough of! Well good news fellow Europeans, because the Sonic Generations: Collectors Edition comes with just that! Albeit in the form of a very fashionable and practical paper weight - how thoughtful of you Sega.

Also included in the CE is a statuette of an ickle Sonic and his slightly larger, thinner and all-round more handsome counterpart, er...Sonic. If that wasn't enough Sega are also including an artbook with previously unseen illustrations, a soundtrack celebrating the 20th anniversary, a DLC voucher and a documentary entitled "History of Sonic: Birth of an Icon".

Furthermore this CE is available for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 and is only available in Europe. As always when we have a confirmed price we will let you know.

You know what's always been missing from games such as Theme Park World and RollerCoaster Tycoon? Full immersion! Sure you could ride your creations before but did you ever feel like you were actually on them? Well now you can make yourself feel just as sick as your little virtual park goers, as Atari have announced in a press release that the latest malevolent god game of all things loops and corkscrews will be available on the 3DS.

Due for release sometime in 2012 Atari have confirmed that RollerCoaster Tycoon 3D will allow complete creative freedom over your metal monoliths. Developed by n-space the 3DS version will allow players to take part in either a "coaster story" mode or a "park sandbox" mode, giving you the choice between beating objectives or just messing around and creating the theme park of your dreams. Also included in the release will be an "immersive management system", a "new gameplay mode with unlockable content" and "advanced networking capabilities".

If you wan't to see the short teaser video then you can do so after the break. For the full press release head over to joystiq for more.

So Nintendo have again been refining their 3DS strategy and it has now been confirmed that the previously rumoured second Circle Pad is real. Andriasang have reported on how Japanese magazine Famitsu have described the addition as an extra cradle for the handheld. The cradle adds an extra few centimetres to the system and positions the second Circle Pad by the action buttons. The magazine also features images of upcoming Monster Hunter 3G and claims that the expansion has been designed with that game in mind.

There isn't an official announcement regarding date and price of the new peripheral, or even what games additional games will make use of the second Circle Pad. However Nintendo's 3DS press conference is scheduled for next week so hopefully we will receive more details then.

Seemingly confirming that, in fact, the Wii is the true home of quality JRPGs - don't believe me? Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower - Square Enix have confirmed the long-ago announced Dragon Quest X will definitely be coming to Wii and will take the form of an "online RPG". What exactly qualifies the game as an online RPG is still a mystery at the moment but a few other interesting tidbits have been confirmed.

Significantly, there is a version also being developed for the Wii U. Although there's a distinct feel of Twilight Princess-itis about this, Square Enix have detailed that the game will be playable cross-platform and feature improved graphics.

It also appears that unlike Dragon Quest VII and IX, this is being developed specifically by Square Enix's teams as opposed to the House of Layton, Level 5.
Over recent years achievements and trophies have embedded themselves firmly in video gaming culture. They encourage competition among friends and allow you to relish in your own successful mastery of a game. More and more gamers are embracing these digital rewards so much so that it has almost become a staple of video game journalism for achievement lists to be "leaked" and detailed online some several months before the release of the most hotly anticipated games. In some ways it does constitute as news and I am sure that there are gamers out there who love reading these lists and find it affords them a glimpse into what the game will be like, and serves to build a greater sense of excitement and anticipation within them. For others though, myself included, these lists serve as spoilers and for the games that I am most looking forward to I avoid them like the plague. Joystiq, amongst others, have posted the complete achievement list for Batman: Arkham City and I debated about publishing a similar news piece here. I decided against it; instead choosing to write a piece on why I like achievements, and what they mean to me. There maybe some achievement spoilers but I have tried to mention ones from older games so that it is more likely that you already know of them.

Like the upcoming Max Payne 3, it was to be a game developed by a studio far removed from those who created the original games – in this case, no Warren Spector, no Harvey Smith. Not only that, but a brand-new untested studio working with their own proprietary engine. Needless to say, I held a fair amount of trepidation.

Then things began to get interesting, previews were doing the rounds, different outlets were praising the presentation of adaptable and variable gameplay, the police station sequence was trotted out to show just how divergent the gameplay and player’s approach could be.

By the time I loaded up Deus Ex: Human Revolution my trepidation had turned to intrigue had turned to excitement. The first two Deus Ex games were powerful and unique statements of intent, ambitious but limited – the sequel in particular receiving its fair share of criticism as dissected in our recent retrospective. Unfortunately, their promising and unique template was sparingly used over the years. And so, the idea that a game could successfully carry the baton of multiple-gamestyles, conspiracy-laden narrative and branching-progression 8 years after Invisible War’s release is an enthralling one.

Nintendo have confirmed that their 3DS product announcement conference, taking place in Tokyo on September 13th, will also be streamed live via Ustream.

As of yet there's no confirmed announcements regarding exactly what will be unveiled at the event. There have of course been rumours of new hardware on the way, but the conference itself has been described as a "new product announcement" conference suggesting perhaps that the conference itself will give details on new releases and software titles.

The event is taking place at 12(noon) in Japan, which translates as 3am here in the UK should you wish to stay up to watch the event. If you'd rather be curled up sound asleep in your duvet then fear not as 8brit will be sure to bring you news of any announcements made at the event.
The special edition will include a gold-coloured Zelda-themed Wii Remote Plus and a music CD with songs from the recent Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Symphony events.

To get the limited edition you will need to pre-order the game. Skyward Sword is due for UK release on the 18th November, those who don't preorder the limited edition bundle can take some solace in the fact that if they purchase the game early enough, they'll still get a copy of the music CD.
